Southwest state lawmakers have today elected the first two female lawmakers ahead of the country's presidential election which is slated for 10 October.
According to the electoral commission, Ms Zamzam Ibrahim Ali won first after defeating Mohamed Ahmed Sayid, 81 to 4 votes in an early race on morning morning.
Zamzam Ali becomes the first senator to be elected from South West state. Ms. Ali also served last parliament.
In the second seat, Ayan Adam Abdullahi has been elected the second senator from the South-West state after she beat her only opponent Farhiyo Nuur Adan.
Senator elect-Abdullahi got 79 votes while Adan got 8 votes. Five votes were spoiled.
Today’s elections comes days after Jubbaland state elected its first four senators.
The elected senators include Mr Ilyas Bedel Gabbose, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, Abirizak Mohamed Osman and Hassan Iman Iftin.
The only female candidate vying for senate assembly in Jubbland state failed to secure the post.
The Senators are normally chosen by elected representatives in the local legislatures of every state.
ubbaland, Galmudug, South West and Hirshabelle state are allocated 8 seats in the Somalia Federal Upper House.
